RCD Testing

Safety Switches Saves Lives

These devices are known by consumers as safety switches, they are also known as a ‘Residual Current Device’ (RCD).

The role of your RCD is to provide a safety switch that disconnects a circuit when it detects the electrical current is not in balance and immediately cuts off the power if electricity comes into contact with any person.

RCD’s are very sensitive and will activate within 10 to 30 milliseconds stopping the flow of electricity.

If maintained correctly an RCD plays a critical role in fire prevention due to appliance or wiring faults and will save the lives of anyone unfortunate enough to encounter any faulty wiring first hand.

RCD Testing includes:

  • A push button test to check the RCD is operational
  • A Trip Time test to measure for “trip time” in accordance with Australian standards
  • Identification and testing of circuits protected by RCD

Upon completion, you will be issued with a Comprehensive Report, recording all test results and actions taken along with your Compliance Certificate.

Many of the electrical fatalities in Australia may have been prevented if a safety switch was installed or a portable safety switch was used.

It is mandatory that safety switches are installed in all new premises and in premises where electrical circuits are added.

RCD’s need to be tested regularly to ensure that all power and lighting circuits are protected.

To fulfil your obligations under Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760, your need to conduct 6 monthly RCD trip time and current tests performed on your premises.

Your RCDs must be compliant and tested in line with the Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760:2010.

Other important benefits of appliance testing include:

A safe working environment for your employees and visitors
Reduced exposure to liability
